Daniel Wann

My research program centers on the psychology of sport fandom. In particular, I am most often interested in the causes and consequences of sport team identification (i.e., the extent to which a fan feels a psychological connection to a team). Currently, I am investigating the following topics as they relate to team identification: how sport fandom helps individuals meet basic human needs such as the need to belong and the need for distinctiveness, visualizations of group memberships, how fans attempt to influence sporting events, and how connections can be built through sport fandom.

In addition to the research listed in my vitae, here are some examples of recent student research projects and theses that I have directed:

  • Bed Time or Game Time: The Impact of Chronotype Matching on Spectators' Moods
  • The motivations of persons completing runDisney events
  • Unmasking the Dysfunctional Sport Fan: The Relationship Between Fan Dysfunction and Willpower
  • Understanding the Influence of Team Identifications Influence on Perception of States
